Driver Thomas again provided me with tonight's story, even though this happened to him a few weeks ago.
He was making a delivery and a young boy around age 9 or so came to the door with the money. During the transaction the boy's dad came up behind him and reminded him of his manners, "What do you say when someone brings you something?"
Much to Thomas' surprise, the child responded, saying, "What took you so long, asshole?"
My night was so-so. Started slow, kind of busy between 8-10, then slow again at the end, which allowed us to finish up and get out on time. In 7 hours driving I took 14 deliveries, drove 47 miles, and made $24 in tips.
It was not a stellar night for tips, witih 5 stiffs, 3 tips of $1 and change, and 4 tips of $2 and change. Only 2 customers saw fit to give me $3 or more.
One of the stiffs was "paid in the store", in other words the parents came to the store, ordered and paid for food to be delivered to their kids.
Another stiff I had to revisit, as there was a mix-up and the wrong pasta was sent. I had 2 other deliveries with me the 2nd time and made sure to take care of them first. They got their remade food the last, which was the level of service that they paid for (zero!).
I had 2 trips to the Super 8 tonight, the customer on the 2nd run saw me when I made my first delivery.

Slow Monday
I worked tonight from 6-11:30 (including 1/2 hour of cleaning after we closed. In 5 hours on the road I took just 7 deliveries. This is a very low number.
Luckily I got $5 and $3.75 on my first 2 tips and ended up with $18. I drove 33 miles.
I got stiffed by a little kid for the 2nd night in a row. It's a shame that people send their kids to do what they are ashamed to do themselves.
I had a delivery to a bar. While I was inside, a guy came in from outside and said "Hey my friends just stole your car." Was that supposed to be funny or what?
There's a new Little Ceasars about to open a few blocks from our shop. I wonder if it will affect business.

Gas For $1.99 / Gallon!
Gas was down to $1.99 today, the first time in recent memory that it has been under $2! I didn't go to my other job today so my only driving was for delivery (plus to the store and back). I bought 1.874 gallons and drove 45.5 miles so my Chevy Prism got 24.3 miles per gallon.
The reason I missed my day job was that my wife went to the Sarah Palin rally in Lakewood this morning. I just needed to get the kids onto the bus before I left for work. Well the flaw in the plan was that "Jay" threw up twice right after eating breakfast so he had to stay home from school. And I had to stay home with him.
On a positive note, this allowed me to get in to my pizzeria an hour earlier than usual, so I drove for 6 hours, unfortunately we were not busy at all and I took only 9 deliveries, all singles! I made $21 in tips and drove 41 miles.

Interesting and Profitable
I had a great night tonight. It was actually a good night plus a very generous tip on a order to a co-worker.
Several interesting things happened tonight. First the lady on my first delivery asked if it was safe to give her credit card number over the phone, if the workers were trustworthy. All I could say was that I hoped so. But really any time you use your credit card you are trusting the merchant, so ordering pizza is really no different.
Next on my 4th delivery, a girl in her early 20's came to the door and apologized, her boyfriend with the money was across the street. She was on the phone with him to return. I joked that she shouldn't have let him have the money but she said it was his money.
On my 7th delivery, I knocked on the door and stood on the porch for about 5 minutes. I called the phone # but no answer. Just as I got back to my car I saw the curtain of the door move. I went back and 4 children, all under the age of 10, answered the door. Surprisingly they had a $2.73 tip!
My 10th delivery was messed up (pizza was made wrong) so that address became my 12th delivery also as I had to go back.
My 13th delivery said they didn't know we delivered. (They only lived a mile from the shop.) They said they would order from us from now on instead of (another pizza chain). She tipped $2 and asked if that was average. I said it was (but actually it was a little below average tonight.
My 14th delivery tried to give me $22 for a $27.10 order. He said he thought I said "twenty-seventeen". He ended up giving me $30 so no harm done.
My 16th delivery only a kid (junior high) was home with no money. His dad thought it was supposed to be a pick-up. I left and took another delivery and came back, and by that time dad was home, and with a $2 tip.
All in all I took 18 runs, drove 74 miles, worked 7 hours, and made $60 in tips.

Thanks Nick!
First of all, thanks to fellow driver Nick for giving me a ride tonight. After my shift, I drove my Chevy Prizm over to an auto repair shop to get the clutch worked on. Nick followed me over there and gave me a ride back to my house. So for the next couple days, my wife and I are down 1 vehicle.
I drove 5 hours, took 10 deliveries, drove ? miles, and made $20 in tips. It was a pretty uneventful night.
The only semi-interesting delivery was where the dad wanted to tip, the mom had no money, and the elementary aged kid said he had money. The dad sent him for $3, saying, "I'll pay you back." I wasn't sure who to thank, other than not the mom (who could have written a tip on the credit card slip).
Finally, let me add this story from England I came across today. It's a great example how not to increase your tip. Evidently there was some dispute between the waiter and the customer, and the waiter added a vulgar note to the customer's bill.

I Love The Rainy Nights (usually)
Check out this post in my other blog for a story about my kids coming to help me at work on Friday night.
I drove tonight and the weather was rainy from start to finish. Usually that means big volume and big tips. Tonight we had 4 drivers until almost 9 PM, and in my first 3 hours I took just 3 runs. Shortly after 9 the other 3 had all been sent home and I was on my own.
Finally we got busier and I took 6 runs in my last 2 hours. In 5 hours on the road, I took 9 deliveries, drove 31 miles, and pulled in $22 in tips.

Happy Birthday, Free Pizza?
I just found Pete's Birthday Club on the East Of Chicago website. It says that kids 2-12 can get a free gift on their birthday. I'm guessing the gift is free pizza of some sort. I'm not sure because I just now signed up my kids.
If you don't have kids or if you don't live near an East Of Chicago franchise, this may be of no use to you. But since I have 7 kids, I am definitely signing them up. When I find out what we get I will post it here.
