My sister-in-law Dawn won the NCAA contest, basically by just picking all the favorites. I had a chance to win until Villanova lost to NC on Saturday night. I've known that Dawn won for about a day and a half but couldn't bring myself to admit it.
Anyhow, congratulations and we will work out the details.

NCAA MSU-Louisville Update
It was bound to happen, I got a cocky and now I have to be a Michigan State fan. Louisville looked awful today, the zone defense wasn't working and they stayed in it until the last 2 minutes when they were already down by 17.

NCAA Elite Eight (halfway) Update
I RULE!
I got 7 of 8 correct in the round of 16, and I'm 2-2 so far in the Elite Eight. If North Carolina and Louisville, both #1 seeds, win on Sunday I will have all 4 final 4 teams correct.
My sister-in-law Dawn, who picked the better seed in every game, is in 2nd place.

NCAA Day 4 Update
What a great job the seeding committee did this year! Of the 16 1-4 seeds in each bracket, 14 of them have made the Sweet Sixteen! Only #4 Wake Forest (beaten by #13 Cleveland State who then lost to #12 Arizona) and #4 Washington (beaten by #5 Purdue) are eliminated. All the 1's, 2's, and 3's advanced.
This is great news for my sister-in-law Dawn, who picked the favored seed in every game of the tournament! She currently sits in 3rd place!
The top 10 are all really close, separated by just 3 points from 1 to 10. And bottom-dwellers George and Dave aren't out of it, as they each were the only team to choose Kansas and Duke (respectively) to win it all.

NCAA Day 2 Update
Yesterday we had 6 teams with only 2 wrong. Today there were many more upsets and there are now just 2 teams tied for first in the standings, at 25 out of 32 correct. Almost everybody is still alive, 13 of us have 21 or more correct.
My father-in-law is trailing with just 17 but he does have his whole final 4 still alive including Gonzaga.
My son Luke is tied for 1st with JW, but JW has lost pretty much his entire Midwest bracket, as he had Wake Forest and West Virginia in the elite eight and both are out.
It was a frustrating night for me. I did get to watch the late games but our Cleveland TV station showed Ohio State vs Sienna. Now this was a great game, down to the wire, but I'd have rather watched Cleveland State knock off Wake Forset.

NCAA Day 1 Update
Today was a day for the chalk, as 6 of our 16 entrants got 14 of 16 correct. I say 16 entrants but there are really just 14 1/4 brackets filled out. Yes, 14 1/4. My nephew Zorlod only picked games in the Midwest Region.
I was at a soccer coaching meeting tonight and then when I got home I watched the Cavs win in OT so I didn't really get to watch any basketball tonight. I did watch Illinois almost catch Western Kentucky.
I've got plans to go out to Red Robin tomorrow night so I won't watch much then either, I will set the DVR to record the Cleveland State timeslot at least.

NCAA Basketball Tournament Pick'em Contest
It's March and that means college basketball. And what goes better with college basketball than pizza? Free pizza!
My blog is once again sponsoring a contest, run on the Yahoo! website, where you can win a $15 gift certificate to the pizza parlor of your choice.
Just follow this link and enter group 138770 and password pepper. I picked a green topping this year to celebrate St. Patrick's Day, and also to honor my hometown Cleveland State Vikings, making their first appearance since 1986!
Good luck to everyone!

Pizza Pick'Em Champ!
Well since nobody picked Memphis, Liprippers won my 2nd annual Pizza Pick'Em contest before the game even tipped off last night. He had picked Kansas to win and was already in 1st place.
Liprippers is also known as Reverand2Cent from the fantasy football website TheHuddle. Last year's champion Nathan, my 11 stepson who just turned 11, came in 2nd this year. He did pick Kansas to win it all, along with 6 other players.
Thanks to all 21 entrants and Reverand2Cent will be getting his free pizza certificate shortly.

Pizza Pick'Em Update
Well the final 4 teams have made it, all #1 seeds for I think the first time ever. North Carolina plays Kansas and Memphis plays UCLA next Saturday, with the championship game on Monday, a week from tonight.
I believe there are 8 possible outcomes. Yahoo! has a new "scenario generator" that I can use to quickly determine who will win in each scenario. Liprippers wins in 3 of the 8 scenarios so he is the favorite for now, but any of 5 teams are still in the running, including my stepson and defending champion, Nathan!
Memphis over (NC or Kansas), Kansas over Memphis - Liprippers
NC over (Memphis or UCLA) - I Like Pizza
Kansas over UCLA - Returning Champion (Nathan)
UCLA over NC - Steel
UCLA over Kansas - Irish

Pizza Pick'Em
The battle is on for the pizza, and once again, my kids are at the top of the list.
Out of 21 entrants, Nathan and Luke are tied for 1st with one other team (Mikes Vikes). All 3 of them got 36 of 48 picks correct during the first weekend of college basketball's spring spectacle. The top 7 entrants right now have 5 different teams as champion (Kansas, UCLA, Tennessee, North Carolina, & Texas) so it's certainly anybody's contest to win.
Nathan, last year's champion, has all 4 of his final 4 teams still alive (all 4 #1 seeds). Mike has 3 and Luke has just 2. BillyBalata, seasound, and Darin3 also have all 4 teams alive and are just 1 point back from the lead.

Carbon Copies
Don't forget to join my FREE contest to pick the NCAA basketball tournament winners. The winner will get a free pizza (or a gift certificate). Sign up at Yahoo!, the group id is 41992 and the password is sausage. We only have 8 entrants so far, so don't be shy, give it a chance!

I was informed of a new policy tonight. We have to get a carbon-copy impression of any credit cards we accept or we will be terminated. (I hope he meant our employment would be terminated.) The first problem with this is that we seem to only have 2 carbon-copy machines (pictured on the left) but we have more than 2 drivers. What if all the machines are out and in use?
Our solution is to use a CRAYON!
The 2nd problem is that often a customer will want to pay by check (which we don't accept) and then switch to credit card at the door. Again, what if the driver doesn't have the form or the machine, or a crayon?
The 3rd problem is that when drivers don't dispatch themselves, they may not be aware that the order is being paid by credit card. This happened to me tonight. Luckily it was less than a mile from the store. Still, who paid for the gas to come back and get the machine? ME!
Between that, the continued high price of gas, and the recent extended pattern of lower tips, I'm really having 2nd thoughts about this job.
Anyhow, I drove 4 1/2 hours, took 11 orders, made $21 in tips, and drove just 37 miles.

Basketball, eBay, Dogs, and St. Patrick's Day
What do those 4 things have in common? Probably nothing except that I'm writing about them today.
First, a reminder. I am hosting a FREE contest to pick the NCAA basketball tournament winners. The winner will get a free pizza (or a gift certificate). Sign up at Yahoo!, the group id is 41992 and the password is sausage. We only have 8 entrants so far, so don't be shy, give it a chance!
Next, some family news. My wife's ebay auction is getting some publicity. She was interviewed yesterday and there is an article in the local newspaper!
Finally, to last night's delivery shift. I'm posting late because Nick and I went out to Rack 'N' Roll after work to celebrate St. Patrick's Day and shot a few games of pool. I won the first game but Nick prevailed in the last 2. He's played more than me recently, he even keeps his own cue stick at the bar! Bartender Heather was frustrated as all of their kegs had gone dry except for Miller Lite.
To start the shift, I was late. RTA service was out of whack due to the large number of people leaving Cleveland after the St. Patrick's Day Parade. I observed 2 fights between drunken high school kids on the train on the way home.
When I finally got to work, I drove 4 hours, took 8 deliveries, drove 34 miles, and made $15 in tips. My best tip was $5 on a $20 order at the Super 8 Motel. After that I got 3 stiffs out of my last 4 deliveries.
On my final delivery, when I knocked on the door, a little yelping dog came out from under the couch on the porch. The dog was on a long chain and I quickly retreated down the steps. The people in the house seemed amused that I was "afraid of their little dog". I asked if they were afraid of being sued.
The dog may not bite, but that's not a chance I need to take for any size dog. The customer has the responsibility to control their dog or they can come off their porch and meet me.

Tourney Pick'Em '08
Pizza Delivery Stories will once again sponsor a free tournament based on the 2008 Mens NCAA Basketball Tournament. The tournament will be hosted by Yahoo!
The group id is 41992 and the password is sausage. First prize will be a gift certificate for a free pizza. There may or may not be multiple prizes, depending on the number of entries.
My stepson Nathan won the contest last year. A new rule this year will be that the prizes will not be awarded to members of my immediate household.
Note that the brackets are not up yet so you cannot fill out the bracket, but you can create your entry and join the group.

Buckeyes Defeat Hoyas!
OSU beat Georgetown 67-60 to advance to the championship game!
Mike D still leads the contest but unless UCLA wins 2 in a row, the free pizza stays at my house!
There are 4 scenarios left, and here are the winners in each case:
OSU over UCLA - me
OSU over Florida - me
Florida over OSU - stepson Nathan
UCLA over OSU - Mike D
In about 3 hours either Mike or Nathan will be eliminated.

Final Four Preview
Congratulations to the teams that made the final four, and to the contest entrants that picked all 4! We had 3 out of 23 entrants, that's pretty amazing!
There are 8 possible outcomes at this point, let's see who would win in each situation. Semi-final games are worth 120 each and the final counts for 160 so lots of teams are still in play.
Dunfee is currently 1st and has UCLA over OSU so if that is the final outcome, he is the champion.
My entry wins if OSU defeats Florida in the final game.
Pizza driver gdogg has Georgetown over Florida so he wins that scenario.
My stepson Nathan has Florida over OSU and would win in that case.
Huddler timmypg wins if his picks, Florida over Georgetown, come through.
Nobody picked UCLA over Georgetown, OSU over UCLA, or Georgetown over UCLA. If UCLA and Georgetown both win on Saturday, Dunfee wins the pizza. My entry will win if OSU defeats UCLA in the final game.
Good luck everyone!

Elite Eight - Day 2 Preview
After a couple of good nights, we have a new leader, it is Dunfee. Today's post will look at who has a chance to catch him based on today's games, Florida vs. Oregon and North Carolina vs. Georgetown.
Dunfee, with 950 points, has Florida & Georgetown.
My entry is 2nd, 20 points, back, and I have the same teams. I can't gain.
Pizza driver gdogg, 3rd place with 920, also has the same picks for today's game.
My stepson Nathan, whose bracket took a hit when Pittsburgh lost, is 40 points back and has Florida & Georgetown.
Fantasy footballers BillyBalata & twiley are each 60 points back and both selected Florida & North Carolina. If the Tarheels beat the Hoyas, these 2 will move into 1st place, as today's games are worth 80 points each.
There's a 3 way tie for 7th with 850 points. This tie will be broken today, as Huddler timmypg has Florida & Georgetown while my wife Victoria and Huddler Puddy both have Florida & North Carolina.
In 10th place with 790 is my nephew Keith. He can only get 80 points today as he picked Texas in the East Rutherford bracket, but he did pick Oregon to defeat Florida so if the Ducks win he will gain 80 points on the everyone ahead of him who loses the NC/G'town game.
All the other entries in the contest are over 160 points behind already and really can't make much ground today.
I'll do another review early in the week once the final four teams are established.

Sweet Sixteen - Day 1 Preview
It's Thursday and the NCAA basketball tournament starts up again tonight with 4 "Sweet Sixteen" games, 2 at San Jose and 2 at San Antonio.
It's Nathan's birthday today AND he is in first place in the contest, so let's see who has a chance to gain on him.
West Region (San Jose)
Top seed Kansas plays #4 Southern Illinois at 7:30, followed by a 2-3 matchup between UCLA and Pittsburgh at 9:40.
Nathan picks: Kansas
These entries have SIU and can gain on him: BillyBalata, Markell
These entries picked a team that was already eliminated: Yang, chiefjay
This is an important game for BillyBalata as he is currently tied for 2nd. Other than that, there's really not much differentiation in this game.
Nathan picks: Pittsburgh
These entries have UCLA and can gain on him: BillyBalata, Dunfee, drborgata, KevinL, twiley, Geist, loaf, Puddy, Markell, gdogg, unateve, junkyard, irish, Keith, chiefjay, timmypg, CaP'N GRuNGe
These entries picked a team that was already eliminated: Luke, meangreen92
This is obviously a HUGE game for Nathan, as there are 17 teams with UCLA marked on their bracket. Nathan cain put some distance between him and the crowd if Pittsburgh wins this one.
South Region (San Antonio)
The first game here is the 2-3 game between Memphis and Texas A&M at 7:27. The late game, and the one of most interest to those of us here in Ohio, pits #1 seed Ohio State against #5 seed Tennessee.
Nathan picks: Memphis
These entries have Texas A&M and can gain on him: twiley, Geist, loaf, Markell, junkyard, irish, timmypg, CaP'N GRuNGe
These entries picked a team that was already eliminated: Dunfee, chiefjay
Another big game for Nathan, as several entries selected Texas A&M.
Nathan picks: Ohio State
These entries picked a team that was already eliminated: unateve, chiefjay
Not a big game from the contest point of view, as nobody in our groupe picked Tennessee to win this one.

Wear A T-Shirt, Support Your Favorite College?
I had a strange phenomenon happen twice tonight. I had a delivery to Harvard Ave. and the guy came to the door wearing a Harvard t-shirt. I was mildly amused but didn't say anything.
Later on I had a delivery on Euclid Ave. to a customer named Meyers. What do you know, he showed up at the door wearing a Meyers University t-shirt.
All in all today (including this afternoon) I took 18 deliveries, drove just 46 miles, and made $34 in tips. All in 5 hours driving (on the clock). Decent $ for a Sunday night but I would have liked the tip amount to be higher. I was stiffed 4 times and my biggest tip was just $3 and change.
Congratulations to BillyBalata of TheHuddle for moving into a 1st place tie (with my wife Victoria and stepson Nathan) in the NCAA Tournament contest. My entry is tied for 5th.

Sunday NCAA Preview
I'm home from church today, my son has a fever, so I thought I would do a little more bracket analysis and see who has the upset picks today. This time I will check anyone who has a seed lower than a 4 winning today and advancing to the Sweet Sixteen.
Two upsets today are very popular among our entrants.
Virginia Tech (5) was selected to defeat Southern Illinois (4) by 12 of our players (Victoria, Zorlod, KevinL, Junkyard, unateve, yang, Puddy, irish, Keith, chiefjay, CaP'N GRuNGe, Meangreen92).
The Volunteers from Tennessee (5) over Virginia (4) was marked on 11 brackets (Victoria, Nathan, BillyBalata, KevinL, twiley, drborgata, Geist, Dunfee, Markell, loaf, Meangreen92)
Edit: Tennessee 77, Virginia 74
Also, UNLV (7) got some love over Wisconsin (2), being picked by 6 entrants (Victoria, BillyBalata, KevinL, Geist, Dunfee, chiefjay)
Less popular upset picks included USC (5) over Texas (4), by 3 entrants (Nathan, drborgata, Meangreen92)
Nevada (7) was selected over Memphis (10) also by 3 entrants (Markell, chiefjay, timmypg)
Finally, 2 of us think/hope/pray that Winthrop (11) will defeat Oregon (3) (Victoria, Geist)
None of us picked either Purdue (9) over Florida (1) or Kentucky (8) over Kansas (1).
Interestingly, gdogg picked the favorites in all 8 games today. My son Luke also isn't explicitly rooting for any underdogs, his 2 upset picks for today (Albany and New Mexico) both lost in the first round.
Good luck and enjoy your Sunday hoops!
