Snow Day

Most of the area schools were off today.  It was bitter cold (wind chill below zero) and I expected we would be busy, but we weren't too busy at all.  In fact I got sent home early!

I had 5 deliveries, 2 were interesting.  One was 2 pizzas, wings, and a 2-liter to a low-rent "weekly" style motel, the Journey Inn.  I had to chuckle when the guy said, "Thanks, now my lunch is taken care of for the week."  He did tip almost $3.

Other one was to the "Fraternal Order of Orioles", a private bar I had never even seen!  Bartender tipped me $5 on a $9.99 order.

Total 2 hours, 5 deliveries, 14 miles, $11 in tips.

Hotel Delivery Etiquette

I went to Kalahari this week with my family.  This is an indoor waterpark and hotel in Sandusky, Ohio.  On Thursday night we ordered pizza from Chet & Matt's.  We got 2 large pizzas, breadsticks, and cheese sticks, for $33, which I thought was a pretty good deal.

Now anyone who orders delivery to a hotel should tip a minimum of $5.  Increasing for big orders, bad weather, or delivery all the way to your room.

The order-taker told me they would bring the pizza to the front desk, and I would have to meet them there.  I was planning to tip about $8.

Well I messed up.  My wallet was in the room, and though I called my daughter to bring it to the lobby, we had a miscommunication and the pizza guy had to wait about 5 minutes before she found us.

He said he didn't mind, we actually struck up a conversation about P90X, which I used to drop 30 lbs last summer, and he is just getting started, hoping to add some muscle.  But I felt awful, making him wait, so I gave him a $10 tip.

What Do You Say?

Driver Thomas again provided me with tonight's story, even though this happened to him a few weeks ago.

He was making a delivery and a young boy around age 9 or so came to the door with the money. During the transaction the boy's dad came up behind him and reminded him of his manners, "What do you say when someone brings you something?"

Much to Thomas' surprise, the child responded, saying, "What took you so long, asshole?"

My night was so-so. Started slow, kind of busy between 8-10, then slow again at the end, which allowed us to finish up and get out on time. In 7 hours driving I took 14 deliveries, drove 47 miles, and made $24 in tips.

It was not a stellar night for tips, witih 5 stiffs, 3 tips of $1 and change, and 4 tips of $2 and change. Only 2 customers saw fit to give me $3 or more.

One of the stiffs was "paid in the store", in other words the parents came to the store, ordered and paid for food to be delivered to their kids.

Another stiff I had to revisit, as there was a mix-up and the wrong pasta was sent. I had 2 other deliveries with me the 2nd time and made sure to take care of them first. They got their remade food the last, which was the level of service that they paid for (zero!).

I had 2 trips to the Super 8 tonight, the customer on the 2nd run saw me when I made my first delivery.

Not A Dream Delivery

Ask any pizza guy about his ideal delivery, and here is what he will NOT say:
  • Delivery to a motel on the other side of town
  • Check is only $12.72
  • Middle aged man answers the door in his pajamas
  • Guy pays with exact change

But yes, that was my 6th delivery tonight. Luckily I had made $20 in my first 3 hours on just 5 deliveries so I was able to laugh it off.

And the next guy tried to stiff me but he miscounted his wadded up money and gave me an extra buck!

Final delivery was (a sandwich) to a Hungry Howies driver who used to work with Manager Desiree.

Totals were 8 deliveries, $25, 43 miles, and 5 1/2 hours. The mileage was kind of high due to all singles and 5 of the 8 being quite far away.

Don't Eat The Messed Up Pizzas!

There are handwritten signs all around the shop tonight, warning that employees are not to eat any food that we do not pay for. We are not to drink drinks. (I didn't ask if this included water, I just got myself a glass). We are not to eat mistake pizzas. Our food costs are "out of control" and if they are not corrected "we will not have jobs."

Talk about a morale booster!

I arrived at my first run tonight and the person who ordered (and planned to pay for) the food was not home. They had been quoted 50 minutes, and I arrived with the food in less than 30. I have no idea why they were quoted that long, but it cost me a tip as the person who paid had to call in for a credit-card payment and the normal method of signing and adding a tip was not apparent.

Next was a double, I got my best tip of the night ($6) on a nearby order then took 2 separate orders (one paid by credit and one added on later and paid by cash) to the 3M plant outside our delivery area.

Next should have been another double, but the first guy tried to pay by check which we do not accept. He had added on a $3.75 tip. The other house tipped $2 on their $17.99 order.

Then came a series of 4 consecutive apartment deliveries that tipped $9 all together. Then my final order of the night was to the local Holiday Inn. A little small-talk led me to learn that the room was occupied by theater actors who had been in a show and were travelling next to Maryland. I'm not sure what show though.

Totals for the night were 10 deliveries, 5 hours, $24 in tips, and 39 miles.

Situations Where A Customer Might Tip Extra

Customers should consider tipping a little more than usual when the weather is bad, when they live far away, or when they place a large order.

My first customer tonight was a $54 order, 5 items in 2 hot-bags. They live 6 miles away, almost to the next town. My average trip is 2 miles each way. And it was cold and snowing (in April!)

The woman answerred the door and remarked, "It's pretty nasty outside isn't it?" She gave me 3 $20's, thought a minute, and asked me for $4 back in change. Leaving me with a $2 tip.

I had 2 customers take advantage of a $10 sale on our extra-large sheet pizza. The first one stiffed me. The second one was on the 4th floor of a hotel just outside our delivery area. He tipped $1.50. Both were pretty discouraging.

All in all I drove 4 hours, took 8 deliveries, drove 35 miles, and made $14 in tips.

Saturday Short Shift

I was out of town for a week. We did order pizza delivered to our hotel one night and paid $30 for our $22.99 order. I thought it was a pretty nice tip. He did bring plates and napkins.

We got home last night and actually went up and ate at our pizzeria as dine-in customers. Everybody is busy getting ready to rebrand the restaurant as a place for chicken wings.

Anyhow Nick asked if I could drive tonight and I agreed. So I worked from 5-9 and took 7 deliveries. I drove 27 miles and made $17 in tips.

Basketball, eBay, Dogs, and St. Patrick's Day

What do those 4 things have in common? Probably nothing except that I'm writing about them today.

First, a reminder. I am hosting a FREE contest to pick the NCAA basketball tournament winners. The winner will get a free pizza (or a gift certificate). Sign up at Yahoo!, the group id is 41992 and the password is sausage. We only have 8 entrants so far, so don't be shy, give it a chance!

Next, some family news. My wife's ebay auction is getting some publicity. She was interviewed yesterday and there is an article in the local newspaper!

Finally, to last night's delivery shift. I'm posting late because Nick and I went out to Rack 'N' Roll after work to celebrate St. Patrick's Day and shot a few games of pool. I won the first game but Nick prevailed in the last 2. He's played more than me recently, he even keeps his own cue stick at the bar! Bartender Heather was frustrated as all of their kegs had gone dry except for Miller Lite.

To start the shift, I was late. RTA service was out of whack due to the large number of people leaving Cleveland after the St. Patrick's Day Parade. I observed 2 fights between drunken high school kids on the train on the way home.

When I finally got to work, I drove 4 hours, took 8 deliveries, drove 34 miles, and made $15 in tips. My best tip was $5 on a $20 order at the Super 8 Motel. After that I got 3 stiffs out of my last 4 deliveries.

On my final delivery, when I knocked on the door, a little yelping dog came out from under the couch on the porch. The dog was on a long chain and I quickly retreated down the steps. The people in the house seemed amused that I was "afraid of their little dog". I asked if they were afraid of being sued.

The dog may not bite, but that's not a chance I need to take for any size dog. The customer has the responsibility to control their dog or they can come off their porch and meet me.

Second-Hand Stories

I drove tonight for 5 hours. I took 11 deliveries, drove 43 miles, and made an unremarkable $19 in tips. My night was not memorable but I do have 2 stories tonight from other drivers.

First Ted was telling about a delivery where a nice-looking young girl met him in a skimpy outfit. Then during the exchange she dropped several coins and bent over to pick them up, while Ted enjoyed the view. She didn't tip, apologizing and explaining where she spent too much money already, but Ted told me he didn't really mind.

Disclaimer: Ted said that, in his mind, this cute girl was definitely over 18.

Nick also had an amusing story tonight. He had a delivery to the local Holiday Inn. He parked at the entrance he thought would be closest but he ended up having to walk all the way down several halls before he got to the correct room.

The customer paid and Nick went to get the pizza from the hotbag but he found . . . an empty bag! He had been on a double and he brought the empty bag from his first delivery, leaving the hotel customer's pizza in his car.

He had to walk all the way back through the hotel to his car, and then back down the halls again. He found the customer still standing with the door propped open, talking to someone. The customer then said to Nick, "No, we weren't talking about you, we were talking about the dog."

I hope I got the stories right. They each told them with more flair than I probably did here, but my own night was so boring I decided to borrow their stories.

I'm off until Sunday night.

'Twas The Night Before The Night Before Christmas

. . . and all the mom's were too tired to cook from shopping all day. I took 18 deliveries in 6 hours tonight!

My first delivery was unique. The woman wanted to "inspect the pizza" before she paid. She opened the box and even picked up a piece of pizza to make sure the bottom wasn't burnt! I've never seen anything like that before. And then she didn't tip, other than the coin change.
My only stiff of the night was to room 7 at the local Howard Johnsons.

My 2nd trip was a 4-bagger that netted me $12 in tips! I also took a triple and 2 doubles, before ending my night with 6 consecutive singles.

I didn't expect us to be as busy or tips to be as good as they were, I expected everyone to be in a depressed mood since our Cleveland Browns lost today.

I drove 63 miles and made $46 in tips. I had 3 tips over $4 but none over $4.75.

Our shop closes early (7 PM) on Christmas eve and we're closed on Christmas. I'm now off until Friday, December 28th so Merry Christmas to all my readers.

Do The Right Thing

My next to last delivery was a stuffed crust pizza and an italian salad to room 210 at the Super-8. Actually it was part of a triple, because I was the last driver. Well I was a little frustrated at having to get the salads put together since the salad bar was already put away.

When I was well on my way, I realized I didn't grab any plastic forks. I thought maybe I could get some at the front desk of the motel, but I really didn't want the hassle. I decided that if I got a good tip I would get them some silverware, and if they didn't, I'd just ignore the issue.

Well the check was $22.95 and they paid with $23.

I handed them the food and went back to my car, feeling guilty. I decided to look in the glove box, and sure enough, I found a single spork, in plastic. I took it back up to room 210. They were so happy that they then decided to give me a $3 tip.

The moral of the story is, do the right thing, whether you get tipped or not.

Totals for the night were 5 1/2 hours, 9 deliveries, $18 in tips, 29 miles.

Bad At Tipping, Bad At Math

This girl tonight had a credit card order for $19.57. She wrote in a tip of $0.48 and then totaled it up to $20.00. Obviously it was her intent to get the total to an even dollar amount, but not only was she a horrible tipper but she was also bad at math, as her tip as written would have put the total at $20.05.

My 2 biggest tips of the night were both surprises, both $5 and change. The first was on a $19.57 order to the Super 8 motel, the guys in the room had been fishing all day. The second was even more surprising, on a $14.69 order to the 200 block of 8th Street.

I also had a girl who was very impressed with herself for using the online ordering. She tipped $4.00 on a $20.57 order so I was excited for her too!

Totals for the night were 16 deliveries, 66 miles, $36 in tips, in 7.5 hours of driving.

It was also kind of an old-home night. I saw 2 ex-employees and talked with another on the phone. Ex-manager Josh stopped in and visited for a few minutes. Ex-driver Tim (known then as "Little Tim" but much bigger now) ordered 2 calzones, and I took the delivery to him. And ex-waitress Katie (and ex-driver Amy) called on the phone to see who was working. They said they might stop in but they never did.

Wardo's Curtain Call

Tonight was my last night to work with Manager Ward. He has taken a job working with Driver Steve at Rent-A-Center. His last day is Tuesday and he will be missed. Ward is a good guy and as much as I give him a hard time, he knows I like him and want the best for him.

Ward has actually come a long way in the 1 1/2 years that I have known him. He started as a server (I called him a waitress) and he became a Hourly Assistant Manager, or HAM. He used to live with his mother and now he has his own apartment. And he just recently turned 21.

I hope that he finds a little more direction for his life and that he develops some ambition, but he is a good kid, very strong in honesty, integrity and loyalty. I told him tonight that I hope he fails miserably and comes crawling back to us, but I sincerely hope this move works out well for him.

His legacy at our pizzeria will be "Wardsticks", or cheesesticks with jalopenos. I plan to explain this, and other secret recipes, in an upcoming post.

Meanwhile, back to tonight's deliveries. In 5 hours I took 11 deliveries, drove 41 miles, and made $24 in tips. That's actually a decent Monday. It was helped by 2 "triples" that I took.

One delivery of note tonight and it was not a good one. Driver Alison was out on a double and I was getting ready to take another double when I noticed a 5th delivery on the screen, to the Holiday Inn.

Now the Holiday Inn is actually not in our delivery area. Our computer won't accept addresses that are out of the area without a manager override. However, if the phone number was already in the system (and theirs was), the order-taker may not realize that it is out of the area, unless there is a notation on the record. And there was not.

Now normally as a driver, I would try to not take this delivery. As a store, we would call the next franchise over that actually DOES deliver there and transfer the order. However the order was paid by credit card so this could not be done. And since my double was actually to the far edge of our area and just a few blocks from the Holiday Inn, I volunteered to take it.

The ticket said room 129 so I walked in, past the front desk, and down 2 long halls until I came to room 129. I knocked a few times and finally called the number on the ticket. It rang at the front desk and I explained that I was the pizza guy and asked them to ring room 129.

I heard the phone ringing, with no answer. The clerk soon came back and said there was no one in room 129 tonight. Weird. The clerk also checked the name on the ticket and there was no one by that name registered at the hotel. The order was paid by credit card so it was not a prank. I called back to the shop and spoke with waitress Stacy who took the order.

Come to find out, she did not type in room 129 or the name on the ticket. They were there from the previous (and only) delivery to that address, way back in November. I asked if she remembered the room number that they did tell her or the name, and she claimed that they did not give her a name or room number. I find this difficult to believe but there I was.

I ended up leaving the pizza, in the hot bag, at the front desk. They were very helpful and I told them that when the customer called us back about his pizza, we would direct him to the front desk. Also I promised to be back after we closed to pick up the hot bag.

With that I finished my runs and headed back to the store. Eventually the customer did call back and I got to speak to him. I apologized for the confusion, told him where to find his dinner, and told him that if there were any problems he could call back and ask to speak to a manager. I then asked if he had wanted to add a tip to the credit card, and, much to my surprise, he actually added a $2 tip over the phone.

So in the end, I can't say that it made me feel smarter, but I did deliver to a Holiday Inn last night.

Oh and thanks to manager Doug who picked up the hot bag as it was on his way home. We also took the desk crew a pepperoni pizza to show our gratitude for their helpfulness.
